Phong Nha caves, four days
Three nights at the edge of the national park, with the two great show caves done at the right hours, a day in the Bong Lai valley, and a plain explanation of where Hang En and Son Doong fit — which is not inside this trip.

Who this is for
Phong Nha sits in a limestone massif on the Laos border where the rock has been dissolving for millions of years, and the result is a park with more surveyed cave than anywhere else in the country. That reputation now pulls two very different kinds of visitor: people who want to walk into an enormous dry chamber for two hours, and people who want to sleep underground on a multi-day expedition. This trip is honestly built for the first kind.
It is a slow four days. One cave a day, a valley day with nothing scheduled after lunch, and a base that does not move. Dong Hoi is 45 km and about 50 minutes from the village, the flight from Hanoi is 1 hour 30, and after the transfer on Day 1 you do not see a long road again until Day 4. Most people underestimate how much of a cave day is spent standing still and looking up, and how tiring that is.
The expeditions are a separate matter and we deal with them in full below rather than hinting. Hang En is two days and USD 128; Son Doong is four days and USD 2,880, sold through a single licensed operator on a capped permit and booked far in advance. We can arrange either, and neither is part of this itinerary. If you want the caves as one stop in a longer central trip, look at the seven-day heritage route or the four days at Hue and the DMZ.
Day by day
Fly to Dong Hoi, settle at the park edge
Hanoi to Dong Hoi is 1 hour 30 in the air; the overnight train up the coast is the other way in and takes most of a night. Whichever you use, we meet you at the door and drive 45 km inland, which is 50 minutes on a good road and the point at which the landscape changes from flat rice to karst towers standing straight out of it.
The rest of the day is deliberately empty. There is an hour before dinner to walk the lane along the Son river, watch the tour boats come back on their chains, and get your bearings in a village that is essentially one street of guesthouses, cafés and motorbike-hire boards. Your guide runs through the next three days with a map on the table, and settles the practical question below.
Cash. The national park ticket counters do not take cards, at all, for any product. There are ATMs in Phong Nha town and none inside the park, and they run dry at weekends in high season. Your entrance fees are already in your price, so this only affects your own spending, but bring more Vietnamese dong up from Dong Hoi than you think you need.
Phong Nha cave by boat, and the afternoon off
The cave that named the park, and still the strangest way in. From the pier in the village a long wooden boat runs upstream on the Son river for roughly half an hour, then cuts its engine at the cliff and is paddled into the mouth. The entrance is a low arch, the river continues underground, and for the first stretch you are afloat in the dark with the boatman working a pole against the wall.
You land inside on a bank of sand and walk back out through the illuminated chambers, which takes about an hour on made-up walkways with handrails. The stalagmite formations near the entrance are the ones every photograph shows; the more interesting section is further in, where the roof drops and you can see the flood marks the river leaves each autumn. Tickets are 150,000 VND per person plus 55,000 for the boat, and the boat is chartered whole for your party.
Back for lunch by one and then nothing scheduled. Swim off the river bank, hire a bicycle, or sit. We do not stack two caves into one day here; the light is the same underground at any hour, so there is no reason to hurry, and a cave in the morning plus a cave in the afternoon is how people end a day remembering neither.
Paradise Cave, then the Bong Lai valley
Paradise Cave is the opposite experience: dry, vast and entered from above. The road runs about 20 km south-west into the park, and from the car park it is a climb of around 1.5 km up through forest to the mouth, or a 60,000 VND electric buggy that takes you most of the way. From the entrance a wooden staircase drops steeply into the chamber, and the first sight of it from the top of those steps is the reason people come. The public boardwalk runs about a kilometre; the gallery itself continues far beyond where the lighting stops. Entry is 250,000 VND.
It is cool inside, around 20 degrees against 35 outside in summer, and the air is wet enough that camera lenses fog for the first few minutes. Bring a layer. Come back the way you went down, which means the staircase in reverse and is the hardest twenty minutes of the trip.
The afternoon is the Bong Lai valley, a side road of smallholdings behind the karst where a handful of farming families have built the loosest possible tourism on top of what they already do: a duck farm that feeds people, a bar at the end of a dirt track with a rope swing over the river, a kitchen doing one dish well. Nothing is polished. We eat late, swim, and are back before dark.
A last morning, then Dong Hoi
Breakfast without an alarm, and one short thing if you want it: the Eight Ladies shrine and the Ho Chi Minh trail road west of the village, which is thirty minutes each way and puts the war back into a landscape that otherwise looks untouched, or a ride out to the botanic garden waterfall.
Then the 45 km back to Dong Hoi, 50 minutes, for a flight or the train. Dong Hoi to Hanoi is 1 hour 30; if you are heading south we will drive you to Hue instead, which is about four hours down Highway 1 and lets you pick up the Hue and DMZ trip without backtracking.

Accommodation at Phong Nha has a lower ceiling than anywhere else on our central routes, and the price table reflects that: the gap between the columns is narrower here because there is no five-star inventory to buy. Comfortable is a clean village guesthouse with air conditioning and a decent breakfast. Excellent is a riverside lodge with a garden and a pool. Exceptional is the best room in the best of those lodges, usually with a karst view from the bed, and it is a good room rather than a grand one. Anyone expecting a resort should be told that before booking, not after.
Entrance fees are a larger slice of this trip than of most. Phong Nha cave at 150,000 VND plus 55,000 for the boat, Paradise Cave at 250,000, plus park fees and the optional buggy, come to somewhere around USD 25 per person before the vehicle, the guide and the rooms are counted, and all of it is inside the figures above. The park ticket counters take cash only. ATMs exist in Phong Nha town and there are none inside the park. Separately: central Vietnam’s flood season runs September to December, and October and November carry real risk here as they do on the coast. In 2025 the event ran 16 October to 6 December, Bach Ma recorded 1,739.6 mm of rain in 24 hours on 26–27 October, and at least 219 people died or went missing across the region. At Phong Nha the practical effect is direct: the Son river rises into the cave and the river cave closes, sometimes for days at a time. February to August is the reliable window.

Who this trip is not for
Caves are a specific pleasure and this trip does not pretend otherwise.
- Anyone who cannot manage several hundred steps in a single flight. The staircase into Paradise Cave is steep, wet in places and has to be climbed again on the way out; there is no lift and no alternative route to the chamber floor.
- People who are claustrophobic. The river cave is entered in a boat through a low arch with the roof close overhead for the first stretch, and there is no turning the boat round once it is inside.
- Travellers who booked expecting Son Doong. It is a separate four-day expedition at USD 2,880, sold on a capped permit by one licensed operator, usually booked a year ahead, and it is not obtainable as a Day 3 add-on however much anyone is willing to pay.
- Anyone who needs a resort. Phong Nha village is one street of guesthouses and cafés and the best room in it is a good lodge room, not a suite with a spa menu.
- People travelling in October or November who cannot accept losing the river cave. When the Son rises the cave shuts, and no amount of planning lowers a river.
Choosing a cave
There are more caves on sale here than any four-day trip can absorb, and they are not variations of one another — they differ by hundreds of dollars, by whole days, and by how fit you have to be. The two in your itinerary are the two we would pick for a first visit. Everything else in this table is arrangeable, and the numbers are the 2026 gate prices rather than an estimate.

Hang En and Son Doong deserve a straight answer rather than a teaser. Hang En is two days at USD 128: you trek in through forest and a stream bed, camp on a sand beach inside a chamber big enough to hold weather of its own, and walk out the next day. It is the most cave for the least money in Vietnam, and it demands a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to sleep in a tent with no plumbing.
Son Doong is four days and USD 2,880, run under a capped government permit by one licensed operator, with a fixed number of places released each season and a waiting list that runs many months ahead. It involves rope work, a wet crossing and a climb of a calcite wall inside the cave. We can put you on the list and we will help with the paperwork, but we will not tell you it can be slotted into a four-day holiday, and we will not take a deposit for it as part of this trip.

Questions travellers ask most
Can we add Son Doong or Hang En to these four days?
Not to these four days, no. Hang En takes two full days and Son Doong takes four, so either one replaces the trip rather than fitting inside it. Hang En is USD 128 for the two days; Son Doong is USD 2,880 for four.
Son Doong also runs on a capped permit held by a single licensed operator, with places released in season blocks and taken up long in advance. If you want it, the conversation starts about a year out and the rest of the trip is built around the dates you are given, not the other way round.
How do we get to Phong Nha?
Fly to Dong Hoi and drive 45 km, which takes 50 minutes. Hanoi to Dong Hoi is 1 hour 30 in the air. The overnight train up or down the coast is the alternative and it stops at Dong Hoi too; it is slower and, in a soft sleeper, more comfortable than it sounds.
By road, Hue is about four hours south on Highway 1 and Da Nang is roughly six and a half, which is why Phong Nha pairs naturally with Hue if you have more days. We charge USD 150 for the road transfer either way.
Do we need cash, and how much?
Your entrance fees and boats are already paid inside the trip price, so you only need cash for your own spending. But bring it anyway: the park ticket counters take no cards of any kind, and while there are ATMs in Phong Nha town there are none inside the park.
Village restaurants, motorbike hire and the Bong Lai valley are all cash. Draw what you need in Dong Hoi or on your first evening rather than on a Saturday in season, when the machines in the village run empty.
Is it worth coming if we are not confident on steps?
Partly. Phong Nha cave itself is close to level once you are inside — a boat in, a sand landing and a made-up walkway with handrails back out — so the river cave is realistic for most people who can walk two kilometres.
Paradise Cave is not. The staircase into the chamber is steep, long and unavoidable, and the climb back out is the hardest part of the trip. Tell us and we will replace Day 3 with a boat morning and the Bong Lai valley, and take the difference off the price rather than quietly keeping it.
