Cat Ba island and Lan Ha Bay, four days
One night in Hanoi, then two on Cat Ba, the island the bay wraps around. You go out on the water by day and sleep in a room that does not move, which suits some travellers far better than a cabin does.

Who this is for
Plenty of travellers want the limestone and do not want to sleep on it. A cabin is small, the engine is audible, and a boat cannot be left when you have had enough of it. Cat Ba solves that. The island sits inside the same drowned karst system, Lan Ha begins a few hundred metres off its eastern shore, and you go out on the water each day from a base that stays where you left it.
It also buys something a cruise cannot: the interior. Cat Ba National Park covers most of the island and is forest rather than rock and water — limestone hills, a marked climb to a viewpoint, and a lake basin behind the ridge. Day cruises never see any of it, because they never land for longer than a beach stop.
Four days is the honest minimum. Getting to the island eats most of a day at each end, so three would leave a single working day in the middle. If you would rather sleep on the water after all, the three-day private charter is the same bay from a chartered boat, and the four-day Hanoi and Ha Long trip gives the city two nights and the bay one.
Day by day
Arrive in Hanoi
Your guide and driver meet you inside the arrivals hall at Noi Bai with a name board. The transfer is 45 minutes and 25 km. Rooms are held from midday, so an early landing does not mean an afternoon in a lobby.
What is left of the day is spent on foot near the lake: Hoan Kiem, Ngoc Son temple, and the streets of the Old Quarter in the hour either side of sunset, which is when the district is least a traffic problem and most a place people live in. This is a short city day by design — the island is the point of the trip and it starts early tomorrow. Dinner is your own; we send three suggestions at three price levels and book if you want us to.
To Cat Ba, and out into Lan Ha by kayak
Leave Hanoi at 08:00. Cat Ba is reached either by road to the coast and a short ferry crossing, or by hydrofoil from Hai Phong; the road and ferry combination is the default because it lets us keep your vehicle with you, and the hydrofoil is an option on the booking form for parties who would rather stay on the water. Either way the run from Hanoi to the coast is 170 km and 2 hours 30 to 3 hours, and you are on the island in time for a late lunch.
The afternoon goes to the water. A local boat takes you out into Lan Ha — bay entry is about 30,000 VND a head, which is included — and you kayak for an hour and a half between the towers and into two or three of the through-caves that are only passable at the right tide. Your guide reads the tide table before choosing which. Swimming is comfortable when the water is over 24 degrees, which in practice means May to October. Back ashore by six.
The national park, and Cannon Fort at the end of the day
An early start, because the forest is worth walking before the heat. Cat Ba National Park covers most of the island; the walk we use is about 3 km each way with a climb of steps and rock to a viewpoint over the interior, and it is genuinely a climb rather than a stroll — hands are needed on the last section. Parties who would rather not do it take the flatter loop through the park instead, and we settle that at breakfast rather than at the trailhead.
The afternoon is slower: a fishing village reached by road, lunch, and time at the hotel. Late in the day comes Cannon Fort, on the hill above the harbour town. The gun emplacements and tunnels date from the wars and are open to walk through, but the reason to be there at that hour is the view — the whole eastern approach to Lan Ha, the harbour below, and the light going flat across the water. It is a short walk from the car park and there are steps.
Island to Hanoi
A last morning that is not simply a transfer. Depending on the tide and your flight, either a short boat run past the floating settlements on the way to the ferry, or an hour at a beach on the east coast before checking out at eleven.
The return is the outward journey reversed: the crossing, then the road. Allow 3 hours 30 for the 190 km from the coast to Noi Bai airport, which makes a flight after 17:00 comfortable and one at 15:00 tight. Back to a Hanoi hotel is 170 km and 2 hours 30 to 3 hours. The columns are hotel class. The guide, the driver, the vehicle, the kayaks and the itinerary are identical across all three. Comfortable means a clean three-star room in the harbour town and a mid-range Hanoi hotel; Excellent moves you to a bay-facing room a few kilometres out of town; Exceptional is a resort room on its own stretch of shore with a boat jetty. Cat Ba has fewer top-end rooms than Hanoi does, so the gap between the second and third columns is narrower here than on our mainland trips.
Party size is the bigger lever. Two people carry a whole vehicle, a whole guide and a whole boat charter for the kayaking afternoon between them; eight people carry the same costs and the per-person figure drops by about a quarter. Cat Ba is reached either by road to the coast plus a short ferry crossing, or by hydrofoil. Both are weather-dependent in the same way the cruise boats are: sailings are suspended when a tropical storm approaches, two or three times a season between June and September, usually with 12 to 24 hours notice. A land-based trip absorbs that better than a cruise does — you sleep in a hotel either way — but the crossing itself can still move by half a day.

Who this trip is not for
Four honest reasons to book something else.
- Anyone whose picture of this region is waking up on a boat. You go out on the water twice and sleep ashore both nights. If the cabin is the point, take the private charter instead.
- Travellers who cannot manage steps and uneven rock. The Day 3 climb is about 3 km each way with a scramble near the top. There is a flatter park loop, but the viewpoint that makes the walk worth doing is not reachable without the climb.
- Anyone who wants a polished resort island. Cat Ba harbour town is a working port with a fishing fleet, karaoke bars and construction. The good rooms are outside town for a reason, and we would rather say that now than have you discover it on arrival.
- People with one night to spare for the north. Two days of this trip are largely travel; the island only repays a stay of two nights or more.

How the days actually run
Early on the travel days
Leaving Hanoi at eight puts you on the island for a late lunch and out on the water the same afternoon. Leaving at ten costs you the kayaking, which is the best three hours of the trip.
The park climb, stated plainly
About 3 km each way, steps and rock, hands needed near the top. We decide at breakfast whether your party does it, and there is a flatter alternative that loses the viewpoint.
Eight travellers, hard limit
One vehicle, one guide, one boat for the kayaking afternoon. Above eight the kayaking stops being a small-party outing and starts being a queue at the ladder.

Questions travellers ask most
Is Lan Ha Bay different from Ha Long Bay?
They are one limestone system divided by an administrative boundary rather than a geological one. Lan Ha is the southern end, reached from Hai Phong and Cat Ba, and it carries a small fraction of the traffic that goes through the central Ha Long channel. Bay entry reflects it: about 30,000 VND a head for Lan Ha against 240,000 to 290,000 for the main Ha Long day routes.
What you give up is the largest show caves, which are in the Ha Long half. What you gain is a working fishing population still living on the water and far fewer hulls in the frame. More on the bay page.
Road and ferry, or hydrofoil?
Road and ferry is the default because your vehicle and driver stay with you on the island, which matters on Day 3 when you are crossing to the national park and back. The crossing itself is short.
The hydrofoil is faster and avoids a stretch of road, and it is on the booking form as an option. It costs you the vehicle on the island, so we hire a local car and driver instead, and it is more exposed to weather cancellations than the ferry.
How hard is the Cat Ba National Park walk, really?
About 3 km each way. The first half is a forest path with roots and mud after rain. The last stretch is steps cut into limestone and then bare rock where you will use your hands. Reasonably fit walkers manage it in about an hour and a quarter up.
It is not technical and there is no exposure that would trouble someone comfortable on a staircase, but it is not a stroll and we do not describe it as one. A flatter loop through the park is always available.
When is the best time to do this trip?
October to April for clear air and comfortable walking, with December to February cool enough that swimming is unlikely — the water sits below 24 degrees and the sky is often grey.
May to September is warm and the sea is swimmable, at the cost of storm risk: bay sailings and island crossings are suspended two or three times a season, usually with 12 to 24 hours notice. See when to go for the month-by-month picture.
