Who this is for
This is the trip for someone with four days and one clear priority: see Hanoi properly and sleep one night among the limestone. It is the most common request we get, and it is also the one most often sold badly — as a coach seat, a shared boat with forty-eight cabins, and a Day 4 that is really just a transfer.
We build it the other way round. Your guide is yours for the two Hanoi days, so the walking route bends to what you are actually interested in. The boat is a small one, twenty cabins at the outside, and it sails in Lan Ha rather than the central Ha Long channel, which carries roughly a tenth of the day-boat traffic. Day 4 has a real morning on the water before the drive back, not a 07:30 disembarkation.
Four days is the floor for this route. Three would mean either dropping Hanoi to a single afternoon or taking a day cruise instead of a night, and both of those are worse trips than they look on paper. If you have five, read the five-day version with Ninh Binh.
Day by day
Arrive in Hanoi
Your guide and driver meet you inside the arrivals hall at Noi Bai with a name board, not outside the barrier with the taxi touts. The transfer is 45 minutes and 25 km on the Nhat Tan bridge road. Rooms are held from midday, so an early arrival does not mean sitting in a lobby.
If you land before 15:00 we use the rest of the afternoon on foot: Hoan Kiem lake, Ngoc Son temple, and the ninety minutes either side of sunset when the Old Quarter stops being a traffic problem and starts being a place people live. Dinner is your own — we send a short list with three price levels and book if you want.
Hanoi on foot and by cyclo
A full day in the city, starting at 08:00 because the Temple of Literature is a different place before the coaches arrive at half past nine. The morning covers the temple, the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum complex from the outside, and the One Pillar Pagoda; the mausoleum itself keeps its own hours and closes for two months a year, and we tell you which it is before you book rather than on the morning.
The afternoon is the Old Quarter properly: thirty-six streets that still carry the name of the guild that worked them, the Long Bien bridge, and a stop for egg coffee somewhere that is not on the tour-bus circuit. We finish at the water puppet theatre only if you want it — it is 50 minutes, it is genuinely old, and it is also very much a tourist show. We would rather be honest about that than sell it as a highlight.
Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay, board the boat
Leave at 08:00 for the coast. The road is expressway most of the way and takes 2 hours 30 to 3 hours for 170 km; we stop once, at a place with clean lavatories rather than a commission-paying jade showroom. Boarding is around midday, lunch is served as the boat clears the harbour.
The afternoon is the reason to be here. Lan Ha has around four hundred islands and, unlike the central Ha Long channel, a working fishing population that has not been moved off the water. You kayak for an hour in a cove the boat can anchor in, swim if the water is over 24 degrees, and are back on deck for sunset. Dinner is set-menu seafood; tell us in advance about allergies and we pass it to the galley in writing.
Morning on the water, return to Hanoi
Tai chi on the sun deck at 06:15 for anyone who wants it, and a real breakfast rather than a rushed one. The morning visit is a cave or a floating village depending on tide and route permission — the bay authority assigns routes and they change, so we name the option we expect and confirm it the evening before.
Disembark around 11:00. The drive to Noi Bai airport is 3 hours 30 and 190 km, which means a flight out after 17:00 is comfortable and one at 15:00 is not. If your flight is late evening we can add a shower room and a city lunch instead of waiting airside.

The three columns are hotel and boat class, not service class. The guide, the vehicle, the driver and the itinerary are identical in all three. What changes is the room in Hanoi and the cabin on the boat, and on this particular trip the boat accounts for most of the gap: a cabin on a twenty-cabin steel boat and a cabin on a six-cabin wooden one are not the same product, and the price says so.
The largest single lever is party size, which is why the table has four rows rather than one price. Two people carry a whole vehicle and a whole guide between them. Vietnam now issues e-visas to every nationality, valid up to 90 days, USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple, processed in about three working days at evisa.gov.vn. Citizens of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordics, Japan and Korea among others enter free for 45 days. Who this trip is not for
We would rather lose the booking than have you arrive and find out on Day 3.
- Anyone who cannot manage a ladder transfer from the boat down to the kayak tender. There is no lift and no alternative on the water; we can substitute a bamboo boat with a rower, but you should tell us before booking, not on the day.
- Parties with children under six. The Day 3 drive is three hours each way with one stop, and the boat has open decks and low rails.
- Travellers arriving and departing on the same short window — a Day 4 flight before 15:00 out of Noi Bai does not work, and we will say so rather than rush the morning.
- Anyone who wants Sapa as well. It is a 6-hour drive each way from Hanoi and it does not fit in four days. Take the six-day version instead.
- People travelling in late July or August who cannot accept that a tropical storm can close the bay at 24 hours notice. It happens two or three times a season. We move you ashore and refund the unused boat night, but the night is gone.
How the days actually run
Starts are early on purpose
The Temple of Literature at eight and Lan Ha at half past three are different places from the same sites at eleven and at one. Almost everything we shift, we shift for this reason.
Eight travellers, hard limit
One vehicle, one guide, one table at dinner. Above eight the trip becomes a coach trip with a microphone, and that is a different product sold by other people.
A number that a person answers
Your guide has our operations line and so do you. It rings in Vietnam and it is answered by someone who can move a car, not by a ticketing system.

Questions travellers ask most
Why Lan Ha Bay and not Ha Long Bay itself?
They are the same limestone system, divided by an administrative line rather than a geological one. Lan Ha sits at the southern end, reached from Hai Phong, and takes a small fraction of the traffic that goes through the central Ha Long channel.
The practical difference is what you see from the deck at four in the afternoon: in Lan Ha, a handful of boats and a working fishing village; in the main channel, a queue. The cave visits are marginally less spectacular. We think that is a good trade and we say so rather than pretending the caves do not matter.
Can we do this in three days instead?
You can, and we will not sell it. Three days means either Hanoi gets one afternoon or the bay gets a day cruise instead of a night, and both are noticeably worse trips. If three days is genuinely the ceiling, spend all three in and around Hanoi with a day at Ninh Binh — that works.
What happens if a storm closes the bay?
The Quang Ninh and Hai Phong authorities suspend sailings when winds reach a set threshold, usually with 12 to 24 hours notice. It happens most often between June and September.
When it does, we move you to a hotel ashore at our cost and refund the boat night in full, or reschedule if your dates allow. What we cannot do is give you the night back. That risk is the main reason we quote this trip lower in the storm months and tell people the October-to-April window exists for a reason.
Is the price per person or for the whole party?
Per person, with two people sharing a room and a cabin. A solo traveller pays a single supplement, which on this trip runs from USD 210 to USD 640 depending on class, because a cabin costs the boat the same whether one person or two sleeps in it. We show the supplement as its own line on the quotation rather than folding it into a higher headline number.
