Who this is for
Five days is the first length at which northern Vietnam stops feeling like a list of transfers. The four-day version of this trip works, but it spends two of its four days partly in a vehicle. Adding a fifth day buys two things at once: a full day at Ninh Binh, and a last night back in Hanoi so that the flight home is not chased straight off the boat along 190 km of road.
The people who book it are usually on a first trip to Vietnam with a fixed return date, or on a longer Asia itinerary where Vietnam gets one clean week. They want the city and the limestone, they do not want to be handed a microphone and a seat number, and they want to know before paying how many hours of the holiday are spent looking at a windscreen. That last figure, on this trip, is about eleven across five days.
It suits walkers moderately and non-walkers entirely — the hardest thing on the schedule is a staircase you are free to skip. Day by day
Arrive in Hanoi
Your guide and driver meet you inside the arrivals hall at Noi Bai with a name board. The transfer into the city is 45 minutes and 25 km. Rooms are held from midday, so an early landing does not turn into three hours in a lobby with your luggage stacked by the door.
What happens next depends on when you touch down. Before 15:00 and we walk: Hoan Kiem lake, Ngoc Son temple on its red bridge, and then the hour on either side of sunset, which is when the Old Quarter reads as a neighbourhood rather than a traffic problem. After 18:00 and we do none of it, and start fresh instead. Dinner is your own on Day 1; we send three suggestions at three price levels and book a table if you want one held.
Ninh Binh: Trang An, Hoa Lu and the Mua ridge
Out of the hotel at 07:30. Ninh Binh is 95 km south of Hanoi and the drive takes 1 hour 45 on the expressway, which puts you at the Trang An landing stage well before the coach groups that leave the city at nine. This matters more here than almost anywhere else in the north: the ticket office sells from 07:00 to 17:00 on a strict first-come basis, and by half past ten the queue for a boat can be longer than the boat ride you are queuing for.
A Trang An sampan takes four passengers and one rower, who works the oars with her feet for most of two hours. A seat costs 250,000 VND; the whole boat, taken privately, costs 1,000,000 VND, which is why a couple can have a sampan to themselves for about twenty dollars more. We normally book Route 2 — four caves, four temples, two hours to two and a half. Route 1 is longer at three to four hours and nine caves, and Route 3 passes the standing set built for the film Kong: Skull Island, which is a reproduction and looks like one.
The caves are low. You will duck, and in two of them you will be asked to sit flat on the boat floor while the rower pushes the sampan through on the ceiling. Afterwards we drive ten minutes to Hoa Lu, the tenth-century capital, where two small temples sit in a bowl of rice and rock and take about forty minutes. Lunch is in a village restaurant rather than the tour-bus hall next to the ticket gate.
Late afternoon is the Mua ridge, and this is the one optional thing on the trip. The staircase up the limestone is steep, uneven, unshaded and long enough that a fair number of people stop halfway and sit down. The view from the top is the Ngo Dong river bending through the paddies, which is the photograph everybody has seen of Ninh Binh. If you do not want the stairs, your guide waits with you at the foot of them and nobody makes it awkward. Back in Hanoi around 19:00.
Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay, and a night at anchor
Leave at 08:00 for the coast. It is 170 km and 2 hours 30 to 3 hours, most of it expressway, with one stop at a place chosen for clean lavatories rather than for the commission a jade showroom pays for delivering you to its door. Boarding is around midday and lunch is served as the boat clears the harbour.
Lan Ha sits at the southern end of the same drowned limestone plateau as Ha Long, divided from it by a provincial boundary and not by anything you can see. It holds roughly four hundred islands, a fraction of the day-boat traffic, and a fishing population that still lives and works on the water. Bay entry is 30,000 VND a head and children under 1.2 m go free — small numbers, but they are on the ticket and we would rather print them than round them into a package price.
The afternoon is a kayak hour in a cove the boat can anchor in, at about 15:30, once the day boats have turned for home. Swim if the water is above 24 degrees, which in practice means May to October. Dinner is a set seafood menu; allergies go to the galley in writing when you book, not verbally on the gangway.
Morning on the water, then back to Hanoi
Tai chi on the sun deck at 06:15 for whoever wants it, and a breakfast that is not rushed. The morning visit is a cave or a floating settlement depending on tide and on which route the bay authority has assigned that week; the routes rotate, so we name the one we expect and confirm it the evening before rather than promising in June what will be true in November.
Disembark around 11:00 and drive back to Hanoi, 2 hours 30 to 3 hours, arriving in the middle of the afternoon. This is the day the fifth day pays for itself: instead of a 190 km run to the airport with a boarding pass in your hand, you have a shower, a change of clothes and an evening. We use it on foot in the Old Quarter — thirty-six streets still named for the guild that worked them, the Long Bien bridge at dusk, egg coffee somewhere off the coach circuit. Dinner is yours.
A last Hanoi morning, then Noi Bai
Start at 08:00, because the Temple of Literature is a courtyard of stelae carried on stone tortoises at eight and a queue for a photograph at half past nine. From there the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum complex from the outside, the One Pillar Pagoda and the presidential palace gardens. The mausoleum itself keeps short hours and shuts for about two months a year; we tell you which side of that your date falls on when you book, not on the morning.
Late checkout is held to 14:00 where the hotel allows it. The airport is 45 minutes and 25 km away, so a flight out from 17:00 onward is comfortable and anything before 14:00 costs you the morning. Tell us the flight number when you book and we will say plainly whether Day 5 exists or not.

The three columns buy different rooms and different cabins. They do not buy a different guide, a different driver, a different vehicle or a different itinerary — those are identical across all three, and the Trang An sampan is the same sampan whichever column you are in. On this route the boat night carries most of the gap between Comfortable and Exceptional: a cabin on a twenty-cabin steel hull and a cabin on a six-cabin wooden one are separate products at separate costs, and the table says so instead of hiding it.
Party size moves the number further than class does. Two travellers carry a whole vehicle, a whole driver and a whole guide between the two of them for five days; six travellers carry exactly the same three things and the per-person figure drops by about a fifth. Nothing about the trip gets worse as the party grows until eight, which is where we stop. The Trang An ticket window takes cash. So does Hoa Lu. Your guide carries the entrance money for everything listed above, so you do not need to, but if you want the sampan to yourselves at 1,000,000 VND rather than a shared seat at 250,000, say so when you book and we settle it in the quotation rather than at the counter with a queue behind you.
Vietnam issues e-visas to every nationality, valid up to 90 days, USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple, usually about three working days, at evisa.gov.vn and nowhere else. Thirty-eight nationalities enter free instead — 45 days for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordics, Japan and Korea among others. US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports are not exempt. Detail on visas and entry.

Who this trip is not for
It is cheaper for both of us if you find this out here rather than on Day 2.
- Anyone who cannot sit low in a small open boat for two hours. The Trang An sampan carries four passengers and a rower, has no shade beyond a conical hat you can borrow, and passes through caves where everyone is asked to lie back against the seat. There is no alternative route that skips the water.
- Travellers who need a lift or a handrail. The Mua stair is optional, but Hoa Lu, the boat landing and the boarding ladder in Lan Ha are not, and none of them are level.
- Parties who want Sa Pa in the same five days. The road to Sa Pa is 315 km each way and 5 hours 30 to 6 hours each way; putting it in this trip would cost you both bay and city. Six days is the minimum that works.
- Anyone flying out of Noi Bai before 14:00 on Day 5 who still expects a fifth day. You will get a breakfast and a transfer, and we would rather you booked four days and paid less than paid for a morning you cannot use.
- People travelling in July or August who cannot accept that a tropical storm closes the bay at a day’s notice, two or three times a season. We move you ashore at our cost and refund the boat night, but the night itself does not come back.
How the days actually run
The Ninh Binh start is not negotiable
Trang An sells tickets first-come from 07:00 to 17:00. Leaving Hanoi at half past seven puts you on the water before the coach queue forms. Leaving at nine puts you in it. That single hour is the difference between the two versions of this day.
Total time in the vehicle, all five days
Roughly eleven hours of driving spread across five days, and none of it after dark except the Ninh Binh return. We publish it because a trip that hides its drive times is usually hiding a lot of them.
Eight travellers, hard limit
One vehicle, one guide, one table. Above eight this becomes a coach tour with a microphone, which other companies sell perfectly well and we do not sell at all.

Questions travellers ask most
Is Ninh Binh worth a full day, or is it a half-day stop on the way somewhere?
It is sold as a half day by people whose vehicles are going somewhere else that afternoon. The arithmetic does not support it: 1 hour 45 each way from Hanoi, plus two to two and a half hours on the Trang An water, plus Hoa Lu, already fills the day before you have eaten.
The version that gets cut in a half-day trip is always the same one — the boat is shortened to Route 3, the ridge is dropped, and lunch happens in a hall attached to the car park. If a full day is genuinely impossible for you, our advice is to skip Ninh Binh rather than compress it, and take the four-day trip instead.
Can we swap the Lan Ha night for a day cruise and get home a day earlier?
You can, and we will quote it, but read what you are buying. A day cruise leaves the pier late morning and is back alongside by mid-afternoon, which means you see the bay only in the four hours when every other day boat is also out in it.
The night aboard exists for the two hours at either end of it — the bay at 17:00 with the day fleet gone, and at 06:15 before it comes back. Removing the night removes both. If the reason is a flight rather than a preference, the better cut is the last Hanoi night, which turns this into the four-day trip.
How bad is the Mua ridge stair really, and what do we do if one of us cannot climb it?
It is a genuine climb: steep, uneven stone, exposed to the sun, with a handrail that is decorative in places. People in ordinary fitness manage it in twenty to thirty minutes with stops. People who are unsteady on stairs at home should not start it.
If one of a couple climbs and one does not, the guide stays at the bottom with whoever is waiting; there is shade, a drink stall and somewhere to sit. Nobody is left in the car park to save face. We would rather split the party for forty minutes than have someone halfway up a rock in the wrong shoes.
We are travelling in December. Is it too cold for the bay, and will we see anything?
Northern Vietnam from November to April is the dry season, and December is inside it. What that gives you at Ninh Binh is comfortable walking weather and thin crowds. What it gives you in the bay is cooler air, water below swimming temperature, and a good chance of the flat grey haze that sits over the limestone on winter mornings.
That haze is the honest caveat: some December mornings the towers appear one at a time out of the murk and it is the best light of the trip, and some December mornings you see four hundred metres and no further. Nobody can forecast which at booking. Storm risk, however, is close to zero, which is the trade you are making. When to go sets out the months in full.
